2007
Sheriff Tompkins wants to expand working inmate
programs; decision is made to start a pheasant program. Planning has started to be ready for raising and releasing of pheasants for the 2008 hunting season.
The following goals were established for the program:
1) Working inmates shall supply all of labor including
the releasing of pheasants at approved sites in Allegany
County.
2) Program should have a positive economic impact
on our county.
3) Program will utilize area school students offering
an educational experience.
4) Establish an independent board to manage
fundraising, selection of release sites and promotional
efforts.
2008
Establish the Allegany County Pheasant Program Board.
Inmates built 80'x 140' flight pen.
W.N.Y. Safari Club Chapter donates approximately 250 7 week old pheasants to raise to adulthood and release.
BOCES Summer Youth Program built storage shed used for pheasant/garden program.
Inmates raised and released approximately 230 pheasants at Hanging Bog, T/New Hudson and T/ Wellsville.
2009
Inmates build additional 80'x 140' flight pen.
B.O.C.E.S Summer Youth Program students build 16'x 24' brood house for raising day old chicks for 2010 season.
Allegany County Pheasant Board purchases 200 7week old pheasants to raise to adulthood for release.
W.N.Y. Safari Club Chapter donates approximately 400 7 week old pheasants to raise to adulthood and release.
Partner with B.O.C.E.S. Conservation Program to have students help release mature pheasants.
Inmates raised and release approximately 570 mature pheasants on roughly 1500 acres in Allegany County.
2010
Inmates finish interior of brood house and set up equipment for raising day old chicks.
We received approximately 750 day old chicks on April 20th.
Inmates build two flight pens approximately 30'x 140'.
The first cycle of day old chicks will be released to outside flight pens the last week of May.
We will receive additional 790 day old chicks on June
July 3rd moved second batch of day chicks to outside flight pens.
July 23rd & 24th soft released approximately 400 fifteen week old pheasant. The pheasants were released in the T/Fillmore, T/Belfast, T/Cuba & T/ New Hudson.
July 26th received 668 eight week old pheasants from NYSDEC.
October 16th pheasant season opens, in season stocking begins on October 19th.
The following is a list of release sites and number of pheasants release on each site for 2010\2011 season:
1) Glennwood Dr. 6 stockings @ 208 birds
2) Butternut Brook Rd. 3 stockings @ 72 birds
3) Co. Rd. 29- Willing 7 stockings @ 189 birds
4) Co. Rd. 6- Cuba 2 stockings @ 100 birds
5) Crotty Rd. - Granger 7 stockings @ 409 birds
6) Co. Rd. 26- Belfast 6 stockings @ 344 birds
7) Co. Rd. 26- Chamberlains 3 stockings @ 52 birds
8) Hanging Bog Management Area 1 stocking @ 40 birds
9) Co. Rd. 2 & 2A- W. Almond 5 stockings @ 144 birds
10) Council House Road 11 stockings @ 463 birds
There were a total of 2021 pheasants released for 2010\2011 season and the last release for the year was on November 17th.
2011
January 1st newly elected Sheriff Whitney takes office and is committed to support the program and working with the Allegany County Pheasant Board.
At the February board meeting it was decided to cut back on the number of day old chicks due to lack of funds in the treasury. The board agreed to request approximately 1000 day old chicks from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation game farm.
April 19th received 550 day old chicks.
June 1st received second batch of 550 day old chicks.
The following is a list of release sites and number of pheasants that each site received for 2011/2012 season:
1) Council House Road 5 stockings @ 212 birds
2) Butternut Brook Rd 2 stockings @ 28 birds
3) Co. Rd. 26 Chamberlains 1 stocking @ 25 birds
4) Crotty Rd.- Granger 5 stocking @ 200 birds
5) Co. Rd. 26- Belfast 4 stockings @ 164 birds
6) Co. Rd. 2&2A - W. Almond 3 stockings @ 69 birds
7) Co. Rd. 29- Willing 3 stockings @ 62 birds
There were a total of 760 pheasants released for the 2011/2012 hunting season. All stocking was completed prior to the start of regular firearms deer season.
2012
After several successful fundraisers in 2011 the board has decided to increase the number of day old chicks requested from NYSDEC game farm.
April 24th received approximately 750 day old chicks.
May 30th the first batch of day old chicks were moved from brood house to flight pens.
June 12th received another batch of approximately 750 day old chicks.
July 19th moved second batch of day old chicks to flight pens.
The following is a list of release sites and the number of pheasants that each site received for the 2012/2013 hunting season:
1) Co.Rd. 26 - Belfast 5 stockings @ 276 birds
2) Council House Rd. 5 stockings @ 299 birds
3) Crotty Rd. - Granger 5 stockings@ 220 birds
4) Co. Rd. 26 - Chamberlains 3 stockings @ 69 birds
5) Co. Rd. 2 & 2A -W.Almond 3 stockings @ 85 birds
6) Butternut Brook Rd. 3 stockings @ 90 birds
There were a total of 1039 pheasants released for the 2012/2013 hunting season. The last stocking of the season was done on November 10th 2012.
